STEPHENS, MARY VIRGINIA BETHEA Formerly of Birmingham, AL died January 5, 2013 at age 93, she was the granddaughter of early Birmingham residents Sumter and Miriam Woodward Bethea. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Malcolm Bethea and Wilma Edwards Bethea; and brother, Malcolm Bethea all of Birmingham; husband, Edward Hunter Stephens of Orinda, Ca. Virginia was born and raised in Birmingham and attended Shades Cahaba High School. After receiving an English degree and certification of teaching from Auburn University, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was commissioned as a Lt. Jr. grade. The Navy then sent her to Radcliff for further studies and in 1944 was transferred to San Francisco, Ca. where she met and married Ed Stephens. Virginia and Ed continued living in California but often came to Birmingham to visit relatives. She is survived by her brother, Barron Bethea (Phyllis); sister-in-law, Sue Ambler Smith Bethea, Birmingham; Virginia's 3 sons and their families, Edward, Jr., San Francisco, Ca., Allan (Diana), Orinda, Ca., and Thomas (Mautria), Salt Lake City, Utah.
