HALLOWELL -- Mary R. Allen, 70, of the Litchfield Road, died July 1, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after an extended illness. She was born in Gardiner on Nov. 8, 1939, the daughter of Frank E. Rollins and Gladys (Elvin) Rollins.Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Hallowell High School. While attending Hallowell High School, she was elected to Girls' State and D.A.R. She was also salutatorian of her class. Mary enjoyed playing basketball and cheerleading. She enjoyed watching her own children and grandchildren play sports at all levels, rarely missing a game.After her own children had graduated from Hall-Dale High School, she enjoyed being the cheering adviser and working with the cheerleaders to create new and exciting routines.For the last 12 years, she enjoyed living in a new house that she designed and had built. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.Prior to her retirement, she was a home health care worker for several years. She was previously employed by the Maine State Employees Credit Union and Key Bank. For about 20 years, she was employed by the Hall-Dale School lunch program, working her way up to the food service manager for the school system. She previously worked for Depositors Trust Co. for several years.Mrs. Allen also volunteered at the elementary school for several years.She attended the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell, was the former treasurer and member of the Hall-Dale Boosters Club, former treasurer and member of the Pine Cone Reelers, and former treasurer and member of the Bombahook Snow Sports Association.She was predeceased by her parents; by twin sons, Todd and Ward Allen, and a sister-in-law, Pamela Rollins.Surviving are three sons: Michael W. Allen of Hallowell, Andrew W. Allen of Farmingdale and Daniel W. Allen of West Gardiner; one brother, Frank E. Rollins, Jr. of Cumberland Center; two sisters: Ruth Rollins Cunningham and her husband, Richard, of South Gardiner, and Dorothy Rollins Nott and her husband, Kenneth, of Farmingdale; five grandchildren: Brandon Nash, Amber Allen, Brian Allen, Jake Allen and Leah Allen; several nieces, nephews and cousins.A memorial gathering will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
