Mary Elizabeth Barrett, a retired New York City public elementary school teacher and long time resident of Valhalla, died Saturday, October 11th at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Yonkers at the age of 95. Born and raised in the Bronx, Mrs. Barrett (nee O'Connell) attended St. Joseph's Elementary School, All Saints Academy High School, the New York City Normal School for Teachers, and City College of New York. In 1935 she married Edmund Charde Barrett and within a few years the couple moved to Yonkers before eventually settling in Valhalla with their five children in 1950. Mr. Barrett died in 1966. Mrs. Barrett's teaching career spanned some 40 years, and, while she had taught at different grade levels, she was most at home in the kindergarten classroom. For twenty years before her retirement in 1973, she taught kindergarten at P. S. 18 in the Bronx. In retirement, as a member of the Ladies of Charity, Mrs. Barrett did volunteer work at St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains well into her 80s. Throughout her life she was well known in everything she did for her warmth, love, and kindness toward everyone she met. No one could come into her presence without hearing a cheerful greeting, a compliment, an encouragement, or some other sign of genuine love and concern. Visitation will be from 2-4PM and 7-9PM Sunday, October 19th at McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home at 491 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday October 20th at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla, where Mrs. Barrett had been a daily communicant. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx. Among the survivors are a sister, Sr. Miriam Matthew O'Connell, SC of Riverdale; one daughter Mary Barrett Herbst of Patterson, New York; four sons: Edmund F. of Venice, FL,Thomas G. of Manhattan and Cornwall, Conn., John F. of St Louis Mo.; Charles J. of Pound Ridge NY; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies of Charity or the Sisters of Charity of New York.
