MARY DOROTHY (CALIANDO) SULLIVAN - VERGENNES - Mary Dorothy (Caliando) Sullivan, passed away peacefully, Oct. 8, 2014, a day after her 93rd birthday. Mary was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Plainville, Conn., the daughter of Joseph and Madeline (Girolamo) Caliando. She met her husband, Kenneth Sullivan, and they married on June 12, 1943. Ken brought Mary back to Vermont to start their family. This was Mary's first experience with no running water and no indoor plumbing! Mary's family and extended family were her life. She was a "stay-athome" mom who focused on raising her five children, along with her nieces and nephews who lived next door. Her life can best be described as a life of service to her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook, an incredible seamstress and avid collector of things! She was also very proud of her Italian heritage, having visited Italy to meet relatives in 1978. After the unexpected death of her husband, Ken, in 1968, Mary went to work outside of the home. For several years, she worked as a caregiver to many area senior citizens. She also worked at Yankee Kingdom Orchards packing apples, and volunteered at the Eagles Club's senior meal club in Vergennes. One of her most rewarding jobs was sewing for others. She was always making costumes, toys, hemming and patching and altering clothes for so many. She was also well known for her speciality shop at the annual rummage sales held at St. Peter's Church. Mary is survived by her four children, James (Mary) of Vergennes, Bill (Lynne) of Ferrisburgh, John (Marion) of Vergennes, and Kathy Rossier (Glenn) of Vergennes; and daughter-in-law, Frances Ann Wisell Sullivan of Panton. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Sean (Tonnie), Michelle Eastman (Glen), Joe, Martha DeGraaf (John), and Chris Sullivan (Lisa), Patrick Sullivan (Kori) and Sarah Sullivan Hale (Chris), Ken Sullivan (Betsy)and Kevin Sullivan (Sarah), Jonathon (Mona) Sullivan, Micah Lee (Dan), Jeremiah (Emily), Josh (Bailey), Zach (Rachel) and Moriah Sullivan, and Emily Rossier and Ryan (Annie) Rossier; as well as three step-grandchildren, Justin, Dannon, and Zachary Kennelly, and their families. Mary was blessed with 23 great-grandchildren, Brendan, George, Hannah, Kristin, Madeline, Gunnar, Sean, Lily, Ruthie, Benjamin, Gabriel, Mac, Meghen, Eagan, Kenny, Kaelyn, Weston, Jackson, Wyatt and Gracie, Myrrh, Grant and Olivia! Mary is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Sullivan, Sept. 8, 1968; her son, Michael J. Sullivan, Dec 24, 2006; and an infant daughter, Mary. Mary was a member of St Peters Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Anne's, Catholic Daughters, and American Legion Post 14 Ladies Auxiliary. The family would like to acknowledge our mother's caregivers throughout the past six years. A special thanks to Sue Rossier (recently deceased), Kay Norris, Ella Hoague, Iona Flynn, Mary Allen and many family members, all who helped keep our mother at her home. The family also would like to thank Addison County Home Health and Hospice, and Elderly Services Inc. for their care and concern throughout these last six years. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at BrownMcClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. A funeral service will take place Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends to make donations to either Project Independence (Elderly Services); Addison County Home Health and Hospice; or St. Peter's Catholic Church.
