Marjorie Peterson Carter 1938 - 2011 BENNINGTON, VT Marjorie (Marge) Peterson Carter was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 14, 1938, daughter of Calvin Lawrence Peterson and Marjorie Alice Peterson. Marge died unexpectedly at home on September 10, 2011. Marge was raised in Park Ridge, Ill., graduated from Maine Township High School in Niles, Ill., attended Purdue University, and received her undergraduate degree from UCLA. Marge and Bob Carter were married on Catalina Island, Calif., on Nov. 1, 1986. They lived in California and at the United States Military Academy, West Point, and settled permanently in Shaftsbury in 2005. Marge was an avid reader, an extraordinary cook, loved gardening and traveling, and was a loyal supporter of West Point and its rugby teams, but her major affections outside of family and friends were her love of four Labrador Retrievers, Maggie, Portia, Bailey and Wiggins. During most of her career, Marge worked as a bank manager in California. Marge was a co-founder of the League of Women Voters in Los Angeles. She was a member and officer of the American Association of University Women in Vermont and several reading clubs, including those in Bennington, Manchester and West Point. She is survived by her husband, Bob Carter of Shaftsbury; a son, Miles Cameron Sherwood of San Francisco; two sisters, Joyce Repsold of Ben Lomond, Calif., and Martha Jordan of Wheeling, Ill., and a brother, Stewart Peterson of Sun City, Ariz. MEMORIAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Marjorie Peterson Carter will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at 3 p.m. at the Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marge's name may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
