MARGARET LOUISE MALONE Margaret Louise "Peg" Malone, 85, died on Oct. 30, 2012, at her home in Plantation Estates, Matthews, N.C. She was born July 1, 1927, to Albert Bidle and Emma Peters in Massillon, OH, where her father worked as an industrial representative for a steel company and her mother was a homemaker. Peg grew up in Massillon with her parents and an older sister, Johanna, and graduated from Mt. Marie Academy. She worked in finance and was affiliated with Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Spirited and independent, Peg feigned disbelief when her blind date proclaimed during a canoe ride "I'm going to marry you someday." She did marry Clayton Francis Malone in 1948, and the couple lived and raised three children in Canton, OH, where he was a salesman and vice president for The M. Conley Co. and she became a homemaker. Peg excelled in home economics, managing family and finances with the precision of an MBA. She also welcomed a menagerie of animals, mostly strays brought home by her children, to join the family. Peg competed internationally in amateur snow skiing events, traveling to slopes in Canada, Switzerland, France and across the United States and Europe. Later, she took up golf and tennis, and enjoyed flying lessons. Peg and Clayton retired to Vero Beach, FL, in the early 1980s. Her favorite past-time was a good game of bridge with friends. She also liked fishing along the shore, and the couple traveled frequently with their children and grandchildren. After her husband and best friend of 53 years died in 2002, Peg moved to Charlotte to be closer to family. She immediately began following local news and politics and rooted for the Carolina Panthers. She continued her travels until the end of her life, visiting Palm Springs in April and celebrating her 85th birthday in July with her entire family overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville. Peg was a devout and compassionate Catholic, and became a member of St. Peter's in Uptown Charlotte, where she appreciated the Jesuit leadership and philosophy. She will be remembered by her family as a gracious and generous woman, who instilled in them a devotion to family, determination and unconditional support for loved ones. In addition to her parents, Peg was predeceased by her sister and her husband. She is survived by three children, Breen Malone (wife Joan) of Canton, Ohio; Joan "Jodi" Malone of Charlotte, N.C. and Mark Malone (partner Bob Blackman) of Palm Springs, CA; two grandchildren, Christopher Clayton Wetmore and Elizabeth "Betsy" Malone Wetmore, both of Charlotte; family friends Liz Chandler and Beth Harrell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and her beloved granddogs Wesley, Barnum, Peabody and Porter. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m., in Charlotte. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Massillon, OH, on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m., Interment will follow at Sunset Hills. The family would like to express its gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Plantation Estates and at Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, and to the volunteers at St. Matthews Church who brought Mrs. Malone Holy Communion on Sundays. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204, or online at www.donatehospice.org , or to a Humane Society of your choice.
