FABER , Louis July 22, 1935 - July 5, 2009 It is with profound shock and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, Zeida and brother, Louis Faber in a tragic accident on July 5, 2009 at the age of 73 years. Lou was born and raised in Calgary, growing up in the heart of the small Jewish community of the time and learning the art of business with his parents and siblings at Jack's Suit Store on 8 Avenue. Always an excellent student, he was granted a law degree in 1959 by the University of Alberta. This year marks his fiftieth anniversary as a successful and highly respected lawyer. He married Shirley Walker in June of 1959 and together they raised four children with love and happiness. Lou worked incredibly hard to build a successful law career and remain a devoted family man. In addition, he spent many hours volunteering for numerous and diverse organizations such as the Calgary Coop, Beth Tzedec Synagogue, the Better Business Bureau and the Alberta Family Mediation Society. In spite of the long hours he worked, Friday night Shabbat dinners with family and friends were sacrosanct. Lou received a vast number of honours and awards in recognition of his exemplary volunteer service, most recently an Alberta Centennial Medal. He accepted all of his awards with modesty and humility. Lou was known as a generous and giving person. He used his skill as a woodworker to craft little works of art for anyone who asked. His centerpieces graced many a simcha and his work adorns the homes of friends and family and is prominent in local synagogues and schools. He was an excellent public speaker, and had a particular knack for writing poetry, which he often did on special occasions to commemorate a person or event. No family event was complete without one of Lou's quaint little poems. His marriage to Reva in 2002 renewed his love of music, theatre, art, and healthy living, and together they enjoyed an active lifestyle, including frequent travel. Lou was a man of immense depth; he was an optimist, a peace-maker and unconditional in his love. He has instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of learning, a love of Jewish Tradition and the importance of family. He was always there for us, always willing to give of himself. He was our Patriarch, our Advisor and our Role Model. We are all heartbroken. Lou was the loving husband of Reva; devoted father of Terrie Faber and Perry Gerwing, Morley Faber and Adeera Levin, Shawna Faber and Berni James, Daniel and Leah Faber, Barry Love and Anne Goldhirsch, and Michelle Love. He was a doting Zeida of Jared, Mikaela, Moshe, Mattie, Sheinie, Yisroel, Pinchas, Levi Itzchak, Schner, Aaron and Ezra. He is also survived by Bubbe (Doris Miller), his brothers Barney (Sandra) Faber and David (Karen) Faber, brothers-in-law Sheldon (Marty) Walker and Morris (Jan) Miller, sisters-in-law Elaine Faber, Miriam Patredis and Lila (Jacques) Mydlarski, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley (Walker) Faber, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Nelson Boxer; brother Ted Faber and brother-in-law Dick Patredis. Funeral Services will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, (North East corner of Highway 22X and 37 Street S.W.) on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at the Jewish Cemetery (30 Avenue and Erlton Street S.W.). If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements in care of the CHEVRA KADISHA of CALGARY, North East corner of Highway 22X and 37 Street S.W. Telephone: 403-244-4717.
