LEOMINSTER- Louis A. "Candie" Candiello, 77, of 14 Oak Ave., died Tuesday, October 29, 2002, in his home, after a long illness. He was born January 6, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Alphonso and Giovanna (Cocchialo) Candiello. Mr. Candiello was an avid New York Yankees fan. While in New York, he mowed the lawn at Ebbot Field. Mr. Candiello was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 until 1945. Corporal Candiello’s service included a tour of duty in the China, Burma, India Campaign, where he served as a medic, earning the Bronze Star for bravery. During a bomb raid in Burma, he pulled a ranking officer into a foxhole and out of the line of enemy fire. Corporal Candiello’s military career included his entry into the Army at Camp Upton, Long Island, N.Y. From there he was stationed at such places as Camp Barkeley, Abilene, Texas, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, Free Town and Durban, South Africa, Kamachi, LaHore Punjab, Benares, Cantoment, Chinese-American Ramgarh T Center, Bi Har, Gauhati-Pandu Assam, Ledo-Margherita, Dhubri Assam, Parbatipur Bengal, Honrah Station, Calcutta, Chakula Bi Har (assigned to the 491-22nd Bomb Squadron). Prior to his discharge he toured Cairo, Egypt, Iran, North Africa, Casablanca, and Tripoli. On May 25, 2001, Mr. Candiello was presented the Victory Medal for his efforts in saving the lives of three servicemen in a fiery bus accident at Fort Devens that occurred in 1944. Cpl. Candiello, serving as a medic at Fort Devens, pulled three men out of a badly damaged bus before downed power lines and leaking gas caused an explosion that destroyed the bus and claimed the lives of four soldiers. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Candiello worked at the Harnett Tannery in Ayer, serving as a representative to the Profit Sharing Plan. He also worked at the former Rex’s Diner, operated his own business, Candy’s Shoe Shine, and worked for Lindberg and Madonia Construction Companies. He later worked for the George R. Wallace Civic Center, Vertipile, Singapore Restaurant, and Whitney Carriage Park. Upon retirement, he volunteered at the Leominster District Court. He was a member of St. Leo’s Parish, the Foreign War in the U.S. Post # 15022, American Legion Post 151, and the Order of the Son’s of Italy Lodge 2666. He leaves four sons, Rocco G. and Thomas A. Candiello, both of Leominster, Marco F. Candiello of Ashburnham, and Louis J. Candiello of Waltham; 3 daughters, Doreen A. Tucker with whom he lived, Cynthia J. Candiello of Leominster, and Angela M. Spinelli of Hopedale; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Candiello of Watertown, Colleen Candiello, Keith and Scott Preville, and Ashley Tucker, all of Leominster, Jeffrey and Andrew Bergstrom, both of Ashburnham, Sarah Dixson of Leominster, Nicholas and Nicole Spinelli, both of Hopedale; three great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. Mr. Candiello was predeceased by 2 brothers and 3 sisters. CANDIELLO --ÊOn Oct. 29, Louis A. “Candie” Candiello, 77, of Leominster. The funeral, with military honors, will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Leo’s Church, 128 Main St., Leominster. Burial will follow in St. Leo’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to either the Leominster High School Legacy Program, c/o Richard Earley, Veteran’s Services, 25 West St., Leominster, Mass. 01453, or Our Father’s House, 53 Lunenburg St., Fitchburg, Mass. 01420, or to the Diversified Visiting Nurses Association, 316 Nichols Rd., Fitchburg, Mass. 01420, or may be left at the funeral home.
