GILBERT Loretta Delchin Gilbert, previously of Milford, beloved wife of the late Don Cahill Gilbert, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at St. John's Hospital of Santa Monica, Calif. Loretta was born on March 14, 1920 in Gorizia, Italy to Eugenio and Maria Martalantz Delchin. Prior to retirement, Loretta had been an elementary school teacher at St. Mary's Parochial School as well as a high school teacher at Milford Academy. After retirement, she remained active as an Italian teacher in the adult education system of Milford and at the Senior Citizen Center of Milford. Loretta was proficient in several languages and an avid writer with a great love of the written word. She was a world traveler, living in and visiting many countries and returning frequently to her native Italy. Loretta was active as a volunteer with Milford Hospital, as well as, Connecticut Hospice. She was always a champion of children and children's causes. Her life was truly a celebration and she is dearly missed and loved by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Loretta is survived by her son, Arnold Gilbert of West Haven; two daughters, Eva Gilbert and Gloria Hayat, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren, Ryan and Stephanie Gilbert of West Haven, George and Alexandra Elkin, and Ariel Hayat, all of Los Angeles. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford, followed by a Committal in Milford Cemetery, Milford. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities/Children & Youth Programs, 467 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
