ATHENS, Ga. - Lola Williams, 87, of Athens, Georgia, died at the home of her son, Hamp Williams on August 7, 2012. Lola Callahan Hubert Williams was born November 25, 1924 in Taliaferro County, Crawfordville, Georgia to Lola Mae Callahan and Jack Hamilton Hubert. She had three sisters: Libby Lane McKee (Paul), Jacqueline H. Shell (Donald), and Saralyn L. Hill (Charles). As a graduate of the 1941 class of Alexander Stephens Institute, she entered the Georgia State College for Women and later finished her undergraduate and post- graduate studies at The University of Georgia. On January 28, 1944 she married George E. Williams, Jr. who with his father was the owner of Williams Drug Store in Crawfordville for over fifty years. In the years that followed they had the gift of two sons, George Hamilton Williams and Hubert Lane Williams. She began her working career as Librarian for the Taliaferro County Library. Later she became a teacher and taught in the Oglethorpe, Greene, and Taliaferro County school systems. In 1963 she won the election for Taliaferro County School Superintendent and held that position continuously for three decades. Lola was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional educational organization, and served as chapter president. She was a faithful, lifetime member of the Crawfordville Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, Church Treasurer, and later as an Elder. Her grandfather, John Henry Callahan, was among the small group that built the Church. Their names are on the cornerstone of the Church as it stands today. Lola is survived by sons George Hamilton Williams and wife Nancy, Hubert Lane Williams and wife Beth; three grandchildren: Kim Young (Jeff), Hamilton Williams (Kristen), and Roxie Lola Downs (Ben); three great grandchildren: twins McKenzie and Gabriel Young, and Ellie Williams; and her sister, Saralyn L. Hill. A private graveside memorial service will be held at the Crawfordville cemetery with Rev. Reggie Haslett officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the YWCO (Young Women's Christian Organization), 562 Research Drive, Athens, GA 30605.
