McILVEEN, LOIS (LOIE) IRENE - 91, Halifax, formerly of Saint John, who taught three generations of children to play the piano, died Saturday at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Harry Oscar and Bertha May (Plummer) Peters. She was a graduate of Saint John High School and trained as a stenographer. She worked in the insurance industry in Saint John before her marriage, and at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John when her children were older. An accomplished pianist, she taught privately in Saint John, Renforth, and Halifax. She was an official accompanist of the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music for many years, and was pianist and organist at a number of churches, including Germain Street Baptist in Saint John and St. James the Less Anglican in Renforth. She was an avid reader and volunteered as a literacy tutor. She loved to travel, pursuing that interest later in life. She was a devoted wife and mother and spent many happy summers, both as a child and with Harris and their children and grandchildren, at the family cottage at Sand Point on the Saint John River. She was a member of Fort Massey United Church, Halifax. She is survived by her brother, John U. (Jean) Peters, Richmond, B.C.; a son, David (Ina), of Sand Point; two daughters, Anne (John) Rapson, Halifax, and Claire (Edwin Head), Dartmouth; grandchildren Maura MacEachern, Sean and Peter McIlveen, Heather Wellenius, David Rapson and Flannery Head; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harris, and a brother, Douglas B. Peters. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Massey United Church in Halifax, with interment of ashes in Fernhill Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences to 1016@alderwoods.com.
