Funeral for Leon Wade Smith, 67, of Mt. Hope will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home Chapel in Russellville with Charlie Britnell, O.D. Bowling and Wallace Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Shoals Hospital. Mr. Smith lived all his life in Lawrence County and was a member of Mt. Hope Church of Christ. He was a volunteer with the Mt. Hope Fire Department and a member of the Lawrence County Historical Society. He worked with youth football and baseball and was a member of the Lawrence County Genealogical Society. Mr. Smith was a poetry writer and won the Golden Poetry Award in 1990 and 1991. He was a member of the Athletic Booster Club of Mt. Hope School and was a poll worker at elections. He retired from the state Highway Department. He was the son of the late Leon G. Smith and Velma Pace Smith. Survivors include two sisters, Gevetta Smith of Mt. Hope, and Mary and husband A.C. “Tip” McCreless of Hatton; three nieces, Susan McCreless of Huntsville, Sandy Moore of Baldwyn, Miss., and Debbie Kerby of Hatton; one nephew, Wayne Kerby of Hatton; one great niece and nephew, Athena and Shane Harrison; and one great-great-nephew, Brennon Harrison.Pallbearers will be the Mt. Hope Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers will be Horace Smith, Elwyn Stephenson, Gerald Hester, Allen Counts, Calvin Smith, Harbert Smith, M.L. McCreless, Lelton Brown and Gene Pickens.
