CHARTRAND,Leon Alfred "Papa Smurf" 2008-11-12 Mr. Leon Alfred "Papa Smurf" Chartrand, 72 years, of Lake Helen Reserve, Nipigon, Ontario passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Nipigon, Ontario with his family by his side. Leon served with the Canadian Army. He drove for Lakehead Freightways for a number of years and for Nip Rock Taxi. Leon was a huge Montreal Canadiens fan and was well known in the area for his blueberry picking abilities. Predeceased by his parents - Loretta and Joseph Chartrand and by a step-daughter Jennifer Potan; he is survived by his wife Irene Chartrand of Lake Helen Reserve, by two step-sons - Michael Potan (& Gloria Black) of Lake Helen Reserve and Aaron Potan (& Elizabeth Simmons) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, by six grandchildren - Mykel, Mason, D’Arcy, Jared, Chase and Maddox and by four siblings. Resting at his home, 12 Main Street, Lake Helen Reserve, where friends may call after 4 P.M. on Thursday, November 13, 2008. Funeral mass for Leon Chartrand, in the care of Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 11 A.M. at the Church of the Annunciation, Nipigon with Father M. McWatch officiating. Interment will be in St. Sylvester’s Church Cemetery, Lake Helen Reserve. Prayers will be offered at the residence on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6 P.M.
