Laura Faye Wakefield, 95, passed away in her home September 30, 2008. Faye was born November 28, 1912, to Oscar and Mary Ponder. She spent her childhood in Bear Thicket, Mo., graduating from Lebanon High School at an early age. Nursing called to Faye. She graduated from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. Faye was defined by her nursing career. She married William "Bill" Wakefield. During the World War II era, they lived in Colorado and Maryland with their young family. Faye continued nursing wherever she lived. After the war, Faye and Bill returned to Springfield, Mo., before moving to Denver, Colo., Omaha, Neb., and Parkville, Mo. They joined Second Baptist Church when they retired to Springfield in 1982. They loved traveling and being outdoors. Faye also attended Central Christian Church. Faye is survived and greatly missed by her son, William "Larry" Wakefield and his wife, Maryann; her son, Richard Wakefield and his wife, Donna of Denver, Colo.; her daughter, Maridel Niederriter and her husband, Jim "Sneed"; and her four grandchildren, Bret Wakefield, Eric Wakefield and his wife, Kirsten, Allen Wakefield and his wife, Lisa, and Scott Wakefield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; brothers, Lloyd, John and Clay Ponder; a sister, Della Wallace; several other half-siblings; and granddaughter, Lisa Turner. A special thank you is given to Ruth Bullard, a neighbor, long time friend, and caregiver. Faye treasured her many friends and family sharing laughter, stories and caring. Until the time of her death, Faye was current on events, politics, and anything in the news. She had an inquiring mind and a forever memory. Graveside services will be Friday, October 3, 2008, at 1 p.m., in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Reverend Don Brown officiating, with a song by Chaplain Franklin Reagan. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home South. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, 1410 N. Fremont, 65802.
