Charles Lawrence `Larry` Smith, 62, Louisville, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at his residence. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday Nov. 28, 2009 at St. Matthews Baptist Church. Visitation was from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Baptist Church. The remains are to be cremated. He was a kind, gentle man and an incurable dreamer. He taught and encouraged people wherever he encountered them. He would always help people achieve more than they thought possible. He was born June 16, 1946, in Clarksville, TN to Charles Ed and Robbie Smith. He attended Clarksville High School and Belmont University, Nashville, TN, where he was the founding president of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity. He received his Masters of Education at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ed Smith; and is survived by his wife of 34 years, the former Patricia "Tricia" Yardley; mother, Robbie Smith; one son, Matthew Smith (Allison); one daughter, Sarah Rohrer (Dan); two grandsons, Tobin Lee and Evan Reid Smith; one non-biological son, Jon Haenning (Tracey); two non-biological grandchildren, Jacob and Savannah Haenning; two sisters, Beckie Hultman (Bob) and Vivian Stephens (Britt); nephew, Scott Stephens; nieces, Andrea and Ashley Hultman, and Megan and Becca Stephens. Memorials or expressions of sympathy can be made to Summer Missions on Wednesdays at St. Matthews Baptist Church and Habitat for Humanity.
