AIKEN, S.C. - L. Eugene 'Gene' Wheeler, 65, of 3 Weymouth Pl., beloved husband of Grace Crawford Wheeler, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Ramey Funeral Home in Saluda. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery. Born in Savannah, GA, Mr. Wheeler was a son of Carrie Banks Wheeler and the late Luther Emanuel Wheeler. He attended The Citadel and was a graduate of Newberry College. Mr. Wheeler had lived in Aiken for 38 years and was a retired claims adjuster with State Farm Insurance. He was the owner of Wheeler Grading Company, a real estate investor and a cattle farmer. Mr. Wheeler was a compatriot of the Bernard E. Bee Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He formerly served as 3rd Lt. Cmdr, and was chairman of the Battle of Aiken for 3 years. He was named compatriot of the year in 2001 and was a member of the finance committee. The 2004 Battle of Aiken ded icated in his honor. Survivors in addition to his wife and mother, include two daughters, Lisa W. Howard and Leslie M. Wheeler, a son L. Michael Wheeler and his wife Ashley all of Aiken, a sister, E. Ann Wheeler of Saluda and six grandchildren, Kristopher Howard, Joseph Howard, Autumn Howard, Richard Weisert II, Tiffany Jackson and Brandon Jackson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd C. Wheeler. Pallbearers will be Kristopher Howard, Joseph Howard, Claude Wheeler, Dr. Jack Wheeler, Jimmy Pou and Charles Crawford. Honoraray Pallbearers will be members of the Bernard E. Bee Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Memorials may be made to the Savannah River Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 3694, Aiken, SC 29802.
