FLORENCE, S.C. - Dr. Kenneth Ardell Johnson, 62, of Florence, S.C., died Thursday, November 11, 2004, at his residence after a courageous nine month struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on November 6, 1942, in Belmond, Iowa, a son of the late Alice and Ardell Johnson. Ken is is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sarah Willing Johnson of Florence; three children, Christopher M. Johnson of Charlotte, N.C., T. Patrick Schroder of Charleston, S.C. and Allison M. Johnson of the home; his brother, Charles S. Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; 14 nephews and four nieces; one great-nephew and one great-niece. Ken was an accomplished and devoted plastic surgeon who practiced in Florence for the last 16 years and previously in Augusta, Ga. He was a kind, generous and compassionate man who shared his God given gift and talent with his patients to help them feel better about themselves. Many of those patients required reconstructive surgery after cance r, and devastating and disfiguring accidents and many have expressed to his family their gratitude and appreciation for his work, compassion and caring personality. He graduated from Belmond Community School Systems in Iowa, St. Olaf College in Minnesota, the University of Iowas Medical School, St. Paul-Ramsey Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota, Duke University in North Carolina and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. He was Board Certified in 2 Sub-Specialties, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Otoloarynology. Ken also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, attained the rank of Major, and was honorably discharged in 1973. Ken was born into the Lutheran faith but converted to Episcopalian in 1986 becoming a member of All Saints Episcopal Church. He was a member of the American Medical Association, S.C. Medical Association, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Florence County Medical Society, S.C. Plastic Surgery Society, and the Lipoplasty Society of N orth America. He served on the Staffs of McLeod Regional Medical Center, Carolinas Hospital System and Wilson Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2004, in All Saints Episcopal Church. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law, Edward F. Willing, Jr. of Windsor, S.C., Kevin Johnston of Columbia, S.C., Charles Martin and DeWayne Deal both of Aiken, S.C., his nephews, Eric Johnson, David Johnson and Robert Johnson all of Iowa. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence, S.C.
