KIRKLAND Kathryn Kitty Pankey Kirkland, 83, formerly of Orlando, FL passed away August 31, 2014 in Jacksonville, FL. Kitty was born October 3, 1930 in Miami, FL the eldest child of Dr. Lindsey D. Pankey and Betty Taylor Pankey. She graduated from Ponce de Leon High School and Ward-Belmont College (Nashville, TN) and attended the University of Florida. Kitty married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Robert Kirkland, in Miami in 1959 and they moved to Orlando in 1966. Kitty loved her friends, traveling, and gardening at her summer home in Highlands, NC. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was always up for an adventure, particularly one that involved hiking and waterfalls. Throughout her life, Kitty was known for her beauty; in 1951 she was selected by Al Capp as the sweetest face in the world, becoming the face of the character Nancy-O in his comic strip Li l Abner. She was named Miss University of Florida the same year. Kitty moved to Jacksonville in 2007 following her husband s death. In addition to her husband, Kitty was predeceased by her brother, Lindsey Pankey, Jr. of Miami and Cashiers, NC. She is survived by her sisters Beth Pankey Lotspeich of Miami, FL and Anne Pankey Martin (Randy) of Atlanta, GA and three children, Laurie Hall of Ocala, Caroline Kirkland Lewis (David) of Ponte Vedra Beach and Robert G. Kirkland II of Tampa. Kitty is also survived by five grandchildren: Will, Graham and Kathryn Lewis and Anders and Dawson Kirkland. Additionally, Kitty is survived by her devoted companion, Francis McDermott. The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice and Brookdale Cypress Village Clare Bridge Place for their compassionate care during Kitty s final months. A celebration of Kitty s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 3rd in Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
