TURNER, Kathleen Phyllis (nee Loughton) Peacefully on January 16, 2005 at Sunset Lodge in her 96th year. Predeceased by her husband Victor, daughter Marilyn Jackson, her five brothers and one sister. Lovingly remembered by her daughter Shirley Winter, sons-in-law John Jackson and Karl Winter, her five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and their families, and her many friends. Kathleen was born on November 6, 1909 in Birmingham, England and came to Calgary at an early age with her family. Times were tough, but everyone learned to persevere with faith and help from the Salvation Army community. She met her husband Vic when he was helping her family. They married in 1931 and had two daughters. During the war while Vic was serving overseas Kathleen moved the family to Ontario where they eventually settled in Alliston. There Kath worked as a sales clerk and seamstress. Boarders were welcomed in the home, giving Marilyn and Shirley all sorts of fodder for stories, such as Kath serving full cooked breakfasts Sunday mornings after she knew some of the young men had been out late Saturday nights! Then Vic and Kath bought the White Rose station and worked hard to make it a go. Later their former son-in-law Bill Edgar joined them in helping to pump gas, grease cars and keep things going. After she lost Vic to cancer in 1963 she enrolled in a Registered Nursing Assistant course in Toronto, and nursed at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children where she became known as the "Grandma Nurse", until her retirement. She moved to Victoria in 1977 and continued to lead a full, active life. Nana loved being a grandmother and cherished all her family, through cuddling a fractious toddler, cooking New Year's dinners for a multitude in her 1-bedroom apartment (she made the best raisin tarts!!), or advising young adults to believe in themselves and God. In her name we share a cup of coffee and a good joke, play a game of bridge, and in spring and fall plant flowers for the seasons God promises will come. A memorial service in her honour will be held Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the chapel in Sunset Lodge, 952 Arm Street, Victoria V9A 4G7 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in her memory may be made to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, the Salvation Army, or to any charity of your choice. 39631
