Elizabeth Buckley Clinton Katherine Elizabeth Sexton Buckley, 89, died December 14, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her family. Betty was born June 1, 1922, in Utica, daughter of Warren H. and Margaret Lewis Sexton. She graduated from St. Francis De Sales School and the College of New Rochelle. Betty was a member of The Yahnundasis Golf Club, The Fort Schuyler Club, The Junior League, Gray Ladies and the Greater Utica Board of Realtors. After a long romance, Betty married Michael Hubert Buckley on August 23, 1947. They shared 63 incredible years together filled with wonderful memories that will last forever. Mike died March 27, 2011. Betty and Mike owned and operated Sexton Real Estate & Insurance for over 50 years. Betty was a pioneer, breaking down gender barriers becoming the first woman in Real Estate in the Utica/Rome area. She was also the first woman to serve on the Board of Realtors. Her love, drive and enthusiasm for Real Estate was obvious to everyone. She was very athletic and excelled at tennis, golf, basketball, skiing and table tennis! She and her family vacationed at the Cape for the last 55 years and the tradition continues. Winters were spent in Turin where Betty ushered in the greatest era in apres ski. She was known for her incredible energy, memorable sense of humor and devotion to her family. Her devotion to her family was most evident in her decision to raise her daughter, Anne, at home with the rest of the family, a decision which was very much against the conventional wisdom of the time. That decision, and Anne herself, are a constant blessing to the family. Betty is survived by her six children, Margaret Buckley Shafer and her husband, James, of Charlotte, NC, Michael Warren Buckley and his wife, Cecelia Cardamone Buckley, of Steamboat Springs, CO, Paul Joseph Buckley and his wife, Sheila Gilroy Buckley, of Utica, Anne McKenna Buckley, of Clinton, who she devoted her entire life to, Mary Sexton Buckley Combs and her husband, Lawrence, of Clinton, and Stephen Andrew Buckley and his wife, Debra Crow Buckley, of Malibu, CA; her 16 grandchildren, Molly Elizabeth Shafer Carroll, Michael James Shafer, Michael Warren Buckley, Jr., Catherine Clarke Buckley, Joseph Alexander Buckley, Mary Margaret (Marnie) Buckley, Machaela Burns Buckley, Delaney Gilroy Buckley, Tierney Sexton Buckley, Ashley Elizabeth Combs, Courtney Lewis Combs, Lawrence James (L.J.) Combs, Benjamin Buckley Combs, Stephen Andrew Buckley, Jr., Allison Crow Buckley, and Jack Crow Buckley; her two great-grandchildren, Emma and Kate Carroll; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend special thanks to our devoted caregivers: Linda and Glenn, Heather, Carol, Maureen, Leona, Rose, Barb, Stephanie and Alice. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
