Karen M. Johnson, 55, of Attleboro died Wednesday November 9, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. She was the daughter of Alma (Barboni) Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, FL and the late Edwin C. Johnson Jr. Born, raised and educated in Newton, Karen was a graduate of Newton South High School. She attended UMass Boston and was enrolled in the nursing program affiliated with St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston. Karen worked as a manager for the New England Telephone Co. in Boston for many years. A capable and dedicated officer of Flotilla 3-2, District 7, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Karen was also a volunteer at several area food pantries and shelters. She was an avid gardener and a gourmet cook. Karen was an avid fisherman, and a respected crew member and officer on-board the "My Sea Star", a 100 ton USCG qualified boat, owned and captained by Alfred J. Charles in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She was "blue water - open ocean" qualified. In addition to her loving mother, Karen is survived by two beloved sisters, Janet Fasano and her husband, Robert of Mansfield, and Linda Wolaszek and her husband, William of South Yarmouth; five nephews, Jeffrey, Jason, Bryan, Christopher, and William; a grand nephew, Connor; and her best friends, Mary and Barbara. Karen was a great and warm friend to all and had a heart that was bigger than life. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday Nov. 17 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Highway Church, Rte. 28 at Forest Rd., South Yarmouth. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Rte. 134, South Dennis. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 16 in the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund, attn: Neuro ICU Unit, Rhode Island Hospital, P.O. Box H, Providence, RI 02901.
