KATHLEEN PANTON SMITH BLUFFTON, S.C. - Kathleen "Kay" Panton Smith, 81, of Bluffton, S.C. and formerly of Vergennes, Vt., Essex Junction, Vt. and Vero Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2009, in the Carolina House in Bluffton, S.C. with her family at her side. Kay was born on Sept. 28, 1927, in Vergennes to Lawrence and Gladys Panton. She was a graduate of Vergennes High School, class of 1945, where she was an All State basketball player. She married Daniel Kimball in 1946, and for the next 31 years, they lived together in Burlington and Essex Junction. Dan passed away in 1977. Kay was an avid golfer and was a member of the Williston Golf Club, Blush Hill Country Club and Rocky Ridge Country Club. After moving to Vero Beach, she maintained a membership at the Vista Royale Golf Course. She won a number of club championships and was a top finisher at the Vermont State Women's Senior Championship. When her health prevented her from playing any longer, she looked forward to watching golf events on television during the weekends. Kay retired from IBM in 1987, and moved to Vero Beach, Fla., where she met and married Bill Smith in 1988. They had lived in Vero Beach before moving to Bluffton, S.C. in 2006. Bill passed away in 2008. Kay is survived by a son, Larry Kimball and his wife Ruth of Bluffton, S.C., and a daughter, Lorraine Campbell and her husband Jeff also from Bluffton. She also leaves three grandchildren, Amy Giuliani and her husband John of Essex Junction, Jennifer Kimball and her husband Todd Ciardelli of South Burlington and Ryan Campbell and his wife Michelle of Evans Mills, N.Y. She is also survived by two great-grandsons, Jack and Sam Giuliani. Kay also leaves two brothers, Lawrence "Turtle" Panton and his wife Joan of Vergennes and Robert and his wife Helen from Williston. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at the North Ferrisburg Cemetery. A reception will follow to celebrate Kay's life. The family requests that memorial donations can be made to the Vermont Kidney Association, P.O. Box 244, Burlington, VT 05401.
