BRATTLEBORO -- Julia Ann Carter, 89, a resident at Hilltop House since July 1995, died unexpectedly late Tuesday night, July 5, 2005, in the Emergency Department at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.Mrs. Carter was born in Brattleboro on Jan. 22, 1916, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Austin) Danyew.She was raised in Brattleboro, attended St. Michael's School and was a graduate of St. Michael's High School, Class of 1932, the first class to graduate from the new school building on Walnut Street.Mrs. Carter went on to attend and graduate from Trinity College in Burlington in 1936 with a B.A. in English.She was employed by the U.S. Goverment as a secretary to a colonel in the War Department within the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. She also worked as a secretary for American Airlines in New York City, and had been employed by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. for 26 years, serving as secretary to the vice president at A&P's headquarters in Manhattan.In 1995, she returned to Brattleboro from Long Island, N.Y., taking up residency at Hilltop House.Mrs. Carter was a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church.She loved going to the Putney Inn and enjoyed an occasional martini. Mrs. Carter was also an avid reader.In August 1963, at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Baldwin, N.Y., she was married to James S.F. Carter, who predeceased her in 1981.Survivors include a step-daughter, Cynthia Kilian of Manchester, N.H.; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two nephews and two nieces.She was predeceased by two brothers, George Austin Danyew and Joseph Michael Danyew, and five sisters, Elsie Brackett, Ruth Brooks, Mary Danyew, Florence Danyew and Margaret Cooper.The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Walnut Street. Burial will follow in the Danyew family lot in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery.Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Saturday from 8 a.m. until the start of the Mass.
