BROWN, Judith Anne After a valiant battle with illness, Judy passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013 in North Vancouver, BC surrounded by family and supported by the prayers of many friends and loved ones. Judy joins her parents, Joan and Warren who predeceased her. She is survived by her sisters, Barb (Jeff), Jackie, and Caroline; her cherished nephews and nieces Josh (Shylah), Joe, Alexandra, Grace, and Portia; and grand nieces, Sophia and Olivia. Born in Montreal in 1954, Judy spent most of her life in Vancouver drawn by the beauty of its mountains and the sea. Judy was a kind, intelligent, gentle woman of integrity who had a drive to do for others. Her passion for teaching began at UBC in 1978. In her own words Judy explained "If you're looking for a life where you're always going to be stretched, challenged, surprised and inspired by your students, then this is a really good life to choose. I teach, and proudly so." Judy wore many hats during the course of her career. She was an associate editor at Canadian Literature; a founding member of UBC's Master of Arts in Children's Literature; she led the tutor training at UBC's Writing Centre; was involved with the UBC / Vancouver School Board Transition Program for Gifted Students, and co-authored writing handbooks used throughout Canada. She was also the recipient of many awards including the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Judy's family wishes to thank her dear friends, Jane, Ramona, and Herbert for their warmth, support and caring. Our thanks also go to Dr. Anna Tinker, Dr. Jenny Shaw, the nurses in palliative care at Lions Gate Hospital and to the amazing and dedicated staff at North Shore Hospice who worked diligently to maintain Judy's comfort in her final days. There is no funeral by Judy's request however a Memorial Service will take place at UBC in October. Donations for a future scholarship in Judy's name can be made to the Dept. of English-The University of British Columbia (Judy Brown-Scholarship) and sent to The Department of English, 397 Buchanan Tower, 1873 East Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1.
