DAVIS, JUDGE MATTIE BELLE, of Coral Gables, FL passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2003. Judge Davis was born on February 28, 1910 in Ellabell, GA. She moved with her family to Miami in July, 1926 and was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1936 and practiced law until she was appointed the first woman Judge to the Metropolitan Dade County Court in 1959. She served on the bench in the Circuit and County Court of Dade County until her retirement in 1996. Judge Davis was a member of numerous legal and professional associations and received recognition for her service to those organizations during her illustrious career. Judge Davis is survived by her nephew, Robert James McManus; nieces Charlotte Denmark, Mary Jo Leiffer, Carol Platt; as well as her sister and other nieces and nephews in Georgia. Visitation will be Monday, July 7 from 6-8PM at Van Orsdale Funeral Home, 4600 S.W. 8th Street, Coral Gables. A private service will be Tuesday, July 8 at Coral Gables Methodist Church with burial following the service at Woodlawn Park Cemetery, Miami. Donations in memory of Judge Davis may be made to The Florida Methodist Children's Home, Enterprise, Florida 32725.
