JOYCE E. ANDERSONformerly of NicholsJoyce E. Anderson, 81, formerly of River St., Nichols, passed away at the Tioga Nursing Facility, Waverly, on Monday, July 30, 2001. She was born on August 21, 1919 in Smithboro, a daughter of the late Leland and Mildred (Holt) Emerson. Joyce was a graduate of the Nichols High School Class of 1937, where she was Valedictorian of her class. Following graduation, Joyce attended Elmira Business School. On October 28, 1939, she married Lawrence Francis Anderson. Joyce served as district clerk for the Nichols Post Office for 15 years and also worked in the Johnson City Post Office. In addition, Joyce was also employed as a bookkeeper and accountant for General Electric in Westover for 25 years. Joyce enjoyed watching television and especially treasured the many visits from her family and friends. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Mary Anderson, W. Lafayette, Ind., Lawrence Larry and Dona Anderson, Conklin, N.Y.; a daughter, Michelle Anderson, Williamson, N.Y.; sister, Lois Bean, Nichols; sisters-in-law, Lois Fraizer, Ellicott City, Md., Sally Emerson, Conklin, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Newell Cass, Nichols; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Shirley Baldwin and Jenny Nichols. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Francis Anderson, in 1956; brother, Richard Emerson; and a sister, Jean Cass. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Joyce's life on Friday, August 3, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Rev. Walter Swetnam, pastor of the Nichols Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Nichols Cemetery. A luncheon and period of visitation will follow at the Nichols American Legion. Those who wish may kindly consider a memorial contribution to the Cady Library, 42 E. River Rd., Nichols, N.Y. 13812, in loving memory of Joyce E. Anderson.
