DAVIS--Joyce Ellen, teacher and writer, 85, passed away peacefully at Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home in Manhattan on October 19th after a long illness. Ms Davis was born in Madras, India to William John Davis and Gerda (Goranson) Davis where her father was associated with the British Government Press. The family remained in Madras before moving to Wales where Ms Davis spent her childhood and was very active in the Girl Guides Organization. Her family then moved to Guilford, Surrey where they lived during WWII. As a young woman in England Ms Davis lived and worked in London for the Rank Organization for several years before emigrating to the United States in 1956. In New York Ms Davis was assistant to the President of BOAC while attending Hunter College where she received a B.A degree, graduating suma cum laude, followed by her M.A degree from NYU. A writer and teacher Ms Davis taught at the Grace Church School in Greenwich Village until her retirement. She is remembered as a loyal and supportive colleague and was loved and respected by her students. Joyce E. Davis traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and lived in Athens, Greece during the early 1970's. She is survived by her long time partner Judith Godwin of Manhattan, her sister Marion Davis of Southbury, Connecticut and cousins in England and Sweeden. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
