Avis de décès de Joy-Elizabeth Miller

MILLER, Joy Elizabeth - Joy completed her journey on Tuesday, April 14, at home with her family. She spent the last three and one half years living through her cancer, and showed us all how it can be done. She never complained, and always had that marvelous smile for all her visitors. Many of you may know Joy from her years as a VON or Public Health or CNIB or CCAC nurse, burning up the country roads throughout Hastings and Northumberland Counties. Many of the area's Personal Support Workers received their introduction to health care from Joy while at Loyalist College, taught in Joy's own inimitable style. Others may have met her at some of the hockey rinks of southeastern Ontario (being a Registered Nurse gave Joy an automatic bye to a Trainers Card, and we believe she was the first female “on the bench” at the Madoc Arena). Still others may have met her at one volunteer function or another - there wasn't any challenge that she didn't tackle with her can-do attitude. Joy's own personal respite came from the cottage, her canoe, and her pets. She imbued our children, Jonathan and Elizabeth, early on with her love of nature and the sanctity of life. The vision of Brule Lake sustained her through many a treatment; and gave her a focus for preparing for the next one. Joy had a lot of help during this journey. The nurses from the VON and the PSWs from Paramed (special thanks to Anne and Linda!) were crucial in helping Joy stay home for the last few months. Kathryn, Fran and Doris from Hospice helped keep the family, as well as Joy, going. Joy's co-workers at the CCAC made sure that if Joy needed anything, it was available. Dr. Bob Bates gave freely of his time, especially when it was critically needed. The staff at Princess Margaret Hospital (Dr. Oza, Naz, Lisa, Robin and Jeff) provided cutting edge medical care while nurturing our social and spiritual needs. We know the Clinical Trials that Joy participated in will lead to more effective and less damaging treatments. And finally, thanks to our friends and family who were always there, providing support, positive messages and way too much food! It was Joy's wish to be cremated, and no visitation be held. A service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m., at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Madoc, with the Rev. Janet Weller officiating. Please bring your stories and memories. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please support Joy's niece in her quest to raise funds for cancer research. Go to conquercancer.ca and sponsor Jennifer Andrew; together we can make cancer history! 11476253
