Joseph Stephen Flanagan, a self-made man, died on Dec. 18, 2012. Visitation will be on Monday at the Beaugard Funeral Home, 869 Kinderkamack Rd. in River Edge, N.J., from 4 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack, N.J., on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment is at George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, N.J. Mr. Flanagan was born in Union City, N.J., on Dec. 18, 1919, to James Flanagan and Teresa McGuire Flanagan, and was one of six children. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1942 and immediately thereafter joined the Army. He fought in the 9th Infantry commanded by General Patton in North Africa and Sicily. Later, under General Mark Clark, he was part of the 5th Army and participated in the invasions of Italy and Corsica and the famous "End Run" to Anzio. His active duty culminated while he was part of the 7th Army that invaded France and Germany. Mr. Flanagan was honorably discharged from Fort Dix in October 1945. Mr. Flanagan started his successful career in the insurance industry with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and always led his office in sales. In 1957, he joined CIGNA Insurance Co., where for many years he excelled as its regional sales manager for Northern New Jersey. He retired in 1986. Mr. Flanagan was an avid golfer and member of the Hackensack Golf Club since 1956. He was elected president of the club in 1979 and served on its board of trustees for many years. Mr. Flanagan's first wife, Lucille Mossi, predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his beloved son and only child, Joseph James Flanagan. Mr. Flanagan is survived by his wife, Catherine. He also is survived by his grandson, Joseph S. Flanagan II and his granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Callaghan Flanagan, also survives him, as does godson, Thomas Perkins, nieces and nephews, including Valerie Walker and Roy Mossi, Michael, James and Joseph Walker, and devoted friend, Paul Cantone.
