ORANGE - Joseph R. Henley, 68, of West River Street, died at home on Saturday, December 20, 2014 following an illness.Born in Greenfield on December 12, 1946, he was a son of the late Ralph L. and Myrtle (Lindfors) Henley and lived in Montague, moving to Orange at the age of 5.Joe attended Orange schools as well as the Vesper George Art School in Boston, and graduated from Ralph C. Mahar Regional in Orange. He received an Associates' degree in Engineering from Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner and had also studied civil engineering at the University of Massachusetts- Amherst and Greenfield Community College.On June 10, 1966, Joe enlisted into the United States Army with the US Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia where he learned surveying. Joe spent a year in Germany as well as a year in Vietnam before being honorably discharged on April 23, 1969On June 18, 1971, Joe married Lesley (Pryor) and they have enjoyed 43 years of marriage.Joe worked for Morris & Knudsen during the construction of the tunnel at the Northfield Mountain Hydro-electrical Project. Afterwards, Joe worked for the Rodney Hunt Company in Orange, was Clerk of Works for 11 years for the Town of Athol Department of Public Works, and Berry Engineering in Petersham for 30 years, retiring in 2010.An active member of the Orange American Legion for 45 years, he had served as the Finance Officer. He was also a member of the Petersham Curling Club where he served as president for 2 years as well as serving on the Board of Governors, and was a member of the Trustees of Reservations.Joe loved the outdoors, whether tending his garden, bee hives or a long walk along the beach in Ogunquit. He loved wildlife and oysters. He was always interested in sailing and built his own sailboat. Joe was an avid reader of non-fictional works, he would spend hours in a bookstore looking for just the right book.Survivors include his wife, Lesley Henley of Orange; son, Joseph T.D. Henley and his wife, Sylvie, of Monkton, VT; grandson, Joseph Alexander D. Henley of Monkton, VT; a daughter, Katherine A. Henley of Wellfleet; and a sister, Cynthia J. Henley of Orange.Joe was predeceased by his father on February 8, 2002 and by his mother on September 20, 2005.There are no calling hours.A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on January 3, 2015 in Holtshire Cemetery, corner of Holtshire and Chestnut Hill Roads, Orange, with Fr. William Hobbs of St, John's Episcopal Church in Athol officiating.Following the graveside service, a reception will be held in Torrey Hall of St. John's Episcopal Church, Park Avenue, Athol.In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Orange American Legion Scholarship Fund, P.O.
