->CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Joseph Phillip Hanley, 72, longtime Wayne, Maine, resident; beloved spouse of 40 years to Jacqueline Frost Hanley; and loving father to daughters Patricia Phair of Wayne, Marybeth Hanley of Narragansett, R.I., and son Joseph Hanley of Boston, passed away April 2, 2006, in the comfort of his immediate family, after a difficult struggle with Alzheimer's disease.Born and raised in a large Irish-American family with deep roots in Gardiner, Maine, Mr. Hanley was the 13th of 14 children to the late Anne Kearns and William "Francis" Hanley. In addition to his beloved wife and children, he is survived by his granddaughter, Alverine Phair of Wayne; his sisters, Christine Beaulieau of Gardiner, Carolyn Coyne of Tolland, Conn., and Elaine Stephens of Jacksonville; his brother, Peter Hanley of Randolph, Maine; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and in-law relatives.A retired high school principal of 20 years, Mr. Hanley went on to become a popular local business owner in Wayne. He developed the Wayne Corner Store into a favorite convenience market, coffee shop, deli and grocery, where residents and would-be politicians would engage in Mr. Hanley's brand of "retail politics." An avid reader and lifelong Democrat who relished political discourse, Mr. Hanley's wit, compassion and commitment to the "underdog" will forever endure in the spirit of his family, friends and devoted customers. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Mr. Hanley attended Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in history in 1958. He remained an active alumnus of the college and was especially proud of his two daughters' legacy as fellow graduates. Mr. Hanley later went on to receive a master's degree in public school administration from the University of Maine, Orono. Visiting hours are scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. for Friday, April 7, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Lincoln Street in Gardiner, with burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery and celebration of life with family and friends to follow. In lieu of flowers, please help support efforts to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease by making a contribution to the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association's Annual Memory Ride, a two-day 160 mile bicycle ride from Vermont to Boston which Mr. Hanley's son rides in each year.
