Johnnie Mae Mitchell-McCoy was born to the late Bishop John F. Mitchell and Essie B. Mitchell on December 25, 1953, in Bunnell, FL and later moved to Daytona Beach in 1965. She attended Mainland Senior High (downtown) and furthered her education in Philadelphia, PA, where she also taught school aged children. Johnnie Mae returned to Florida in 1988 and was employed by Clyatt's Nursing Home doing what she loved to do, cook. Johnnie Mae was a great cook and she took joy in preparing delicious meals for family, friends and anyone who was hungry. She was very creative and had a flair for decorating and coordinating weddings. She leaves to cherish loving memories five children, Durk (Willetta) Tillmon, Coretta (Stevie) Davenport, Jerome Tillmon, Shalonda (Kevin) Harris, Kinta (Keisha) Williams; siblings, Anthony Mitchell, Calvin Mitchell, Joyce (Woodrow) Williams, Beverly (Rodney) Gilliard, Angela Cox; 19 grandchildren; two goddaughters, Amy Hall and Jillease (Lenzell) Riley; and a host of relatives and sorrowing friends. Viewing and visitation with the family will be today (Friday, April 15, 2011) from 5 pm until 8 pm, at Herbert Thompson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 3 pm, Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Morning Star Baptist Church, where Rev. Evans Smith is pastor, with Bishop Melvin Spain of Conway, SC delivering the eulogy.
