KEARNEY John T. Kearney, age 81, of Bridgeport, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Sheila Sullivan Kearney. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Katherine Heffernan Kearney. He attended St. Patrick School and Central High School and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, class of 1949. Mr. Kearney was employed by the Singer Sewing Machine Company for over 20 years in Connecticut, Tennessee, Missouri and New York. His last assignment with Singer was as national sales promotion manager, Industrial Products division. Mr. Kearney was also sales manager for McMellon Brothers, Stratford for 20 years until his retirement in 1993. As a member of St. Andrew R.C. Church, Mr. Kearney was an active choir member, past chairman of the Parish Council. Social Concerns Committee member, a lector, a Cursillista, and was active in the Holy Family Retreat Movement, West Hartford for many years. Mr. Kearney was a life member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was former national fund vice chairman of the American Red Cross, was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association, and was a member of the Gaelic American Club. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his three sons, Timothy of East Freetown, Mass., Sean of Watertown, S.D., Kelly of Simsbury; four daughters, Maura Padulo of Bridgeport, Patricia George of Torrey, Utah, Kathleen Kearney-Reaves of Ferron, Utah and Colleen Kearney-Adriani of Easton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Leigh Ellen McNemar, Ryan and Colin Kearney, Amanda and Jordan Huntington, Kaitlin Reaves, Mary Kate, Patrick and Emily Kearney, two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Meaghan Padulo. He is also survived by his two loving sisters, Katherine Zaveruha of Stratford and Bernice Arbegast and her husband, William, of Branford; brother-in-law, Eugene Sullivan and wife, Kathy, brother-in-law, Robert Strathman and wife, Jeanne and 23 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law and friend, Alexander Zaveruha of Stratford. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:45 a.m. from the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Andrew Church, Bridgeport with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Meaghan Padulo Scholarship Fund c/o Pinkerton Academy, 19 North Main Street, Derry, N.H. 03038.
