John Patrick Carr Jr., 73 YORK -- John Patrick Carr Jr., 73, died unexpectedly, but peacefully, at York Hospital on Monday, July 25, 2011, with his loving family at his side. Born on Jan. 9, 1938, the son of John and Julia (Fentross) Carr, he grew up in Charlestown, Mass., where he met and married his wife of 53 years, Joan T. (Cella) Carr. Together they raised five sons in Tewksbury, Mass., where they lived for more than 30 years. John began his career with New England Telephone and moved on to become the International Representative for the IBEW. He was a longtime member of the IBEW Local 2222. Following his retirement, he and Joan moved to York to live close to family and enjoy time with their many grandchildren. John became an active advocate for senior citizens in the State of Maine and served as the President of the Maine Council of Senior Citizens for more than 10 years. He was a member of the York County Democratic Committee. He was also an avid golfer. He is survived by his beloved wife Joan of York; his sons, John P. Carr III of Canterbury, N.H., a daughter-in-law Jeanne Dockray of Canterbury, N.H., James M. Carr and his wife Jeannie, Joseph P. Carr and his wife Cathleen, Jerome F. Carr and his wife Sandra, and Jeffrey M. Carr and his wife Victoria, all of York. He was a wonderful grandfather to his 12 grandchildren, John, Jenny and Jill Carr of Canterbury, N.H., Devin Zucker, Keegan, Kevin, Stephen, Kendall, Thomas, Julia, Rachel and Delia Carr, all of York. He also leaves a brother Paul Carr of Chelsea, Mass., and two sisters, Elizabeth Smith of Stoneham, Mass., and Mary Bleiler of Lynn, Mass. A memorial Mass for John will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 29, in St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York.
