John P. Moriarty, Lowell native John Patrick Moriarty of Somerville, Mass., died peacefully at his home, after a 25 year battle with cancer on Saturday, March 19, at the age of 70. He led an exemplary life; the outpouring during his final weeks, paid by the people he touched, was a tribute to him. He was a peaceful, brilliant man whose wisdom and kindness were felt by anyone who had the pleasure to know him. Family and friends knew John had a sympathetic ear, a sharp mind and the heart of a lion. His benevolent spirit and granite resolve gave us faith in him, but more important, in ourselves to do good work in the world; his quiet confidence gave us space to voice our regrets and fears for a more trustworthy confidant could not be found. His courage never failed, his loyalty never wavered, a better friend there was not; a life of such high principle is most rare. Born in Lowell, he was a boxer and a scholar who moved to Cambridge to become a poet and a caster of bronze. He settled in Somerville, in a house he built, to become a cabinet maker and an analytical chemist; he never boasted and loved a good song. First and foremost, he was a family man, a loving and supportive son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He will be well remembered and deeply missed. Sleep well old man in the safe knowledge we love you and are thankful and forever indebted to you. Please forgive us if we are too proud of you but even in death you possessed the grace that defined your life.In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours for John and the burial will be private.
