John P. "Jack" Hurley, most recently a resident of Mendham, died suddenly in his sleep very early this past Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009. Jack had been a widower for 11 weeks following 60 years of marriage to Jacqueline Bull Hurley. Jack was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Morristown and lived most of his life in Millington. He graduated from Morristown School, where he was a standout athlete and was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. His family was comprised of three brothers and two sisters. During World War II, Jack served for over three years in the U.S. Marine Air Corps, 18 months overseas in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Upon his return stateside, he played 55 games with the Cherry Point, N.C., Marine Baseball Team, where he played against the Brooklyn Dodgers, among others. After service Jack attended the University of Vermont, where he was graduated in 1950. He was also inducted into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame after earning a total of eight varsity letters in baseball, football, and hockey. As a football player, he started at left half and was awarded All-New England Honorable Mention in 1948, making Tom Harmon's Little All-America Checklist the same year, while being named All-Vermont State in both 1947 and 1948. The starting centerfielder in baseball from 1946 to '49, he was team captain twice while amassing a career batting average of nearly .300, and played summer baseball for the Burlington Cardinals for two years. He was the starting left wing on the hockey team from 1947 to '48. Jack was house president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and first president of the fledgling UVM Varsity Club. Jack was married in 1949 and began a family which included a daughter and a son. He was devoted to his entire family, a large one, for the rest of his life. Jack received an M.A. degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts, became a teacher and coached high school athletics in Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey, winning the Southern York County Conference basketball title in 1953 at St. Ignatius in Sanford, Maine. After a few years back in New Jersey, he moved from Flemington to Millington and went into real estate, becoming a realtor and appraiser and owned his own brokerage in Morris Plains for over 30 years, during which time he also served as president of the Morris Township-Morris Plains Kiwanis Club. Jack became an avid golfer and a loyal, lon-standing member of Springbrook Country Club in Morristown. At various times, he also served as chairman of the Lafayette Club of Alumni Fundraising for the University of Vermont and a member of the Coaches Circle of the Catamount Club, also at the University of Vermont. He is survived by his daughter, Ann Hurley Mead; son, John P. Hurley, Jr., as well as grandsons, Timothy Achille and Ian P. Mead.
