COLONIE John Macken, 87, of Colonie, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2003 at St. Peter's Hospital. He was born in Watervliet and was the son of the late Patrick W. and Elinor Skyman Macken. Mr. Macken was a resident of Colonie for 51 years. John was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving his country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. John was employed for the Tobin Packing Co. as a butcher, retiring after 42 years of service. He served as treasurer for the Local Independent Meat Packers Union. Mr. Macken was a member of the Ambrose J. Scully American Legion Post #1019 for 57 years and a past member of the Bethlehem Elks. John was a singer with the former Albany Light Opera. Mr. Macken was a lifelong Democrat. He loved to bowl and won the Brother's Tournament with his brother William with a 700+ series. John was an avid golfer, singer and dancer who loved cookies and always had room for dessert. He participated in and won, his family's annual tomato growing contest. Mr. Macken will always be remembered as his family's shelter in the storm. He is the husband of the late Katherine Stack Macken and Catherine Birch Macken. John is the beloved father of Geraldine Hausman of Glenmont, James Macken and his wife Arlene of Port Charlotte, Fla., William P. Macken and his wife Rebecca of Titusville, Fla., Kathy Moutray and her husband Bill of Colonie, Cindy Pullman of Colonie and the late John Macken. John is survived by his special granddaughter, sidekick and pal, Kimberley Moutray; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Macken of Rotterdam; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, William and Theodore Macken. The family wishes to extend special thanks to John's sister-in-law, Marie Stack for all of the loving care and support she gave to John. Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 8:45 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Avenue) then to Our Lady of Mercy Church at 9:30 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeastern Association of the Blind, 301 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12203, in memory of John Macken.
