MACKEND John Howard passed away peacefully on October 22, 2004 in Victoria, B.C. He was born in Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland, on March 21, 1911. Predeceased by his two brothers, Andrew and Harvie, he is survived by his sisters Doris Peet and Valery (Bob) Burnham. John ("Uncle Howard") was a life-long bachelor, who will be remembered by family and friends as a kind and eccentric man, who was not career-driven, but who loved his classical music, opera, reading and engaging others in scholarly conversation. His Scottish heritage was always proudly conveyed with characteristic wit and intelligence. John received his B.A. in modern languages from the University of B.C., spent some time in the Merchant Navy, served his country as aircraft ground crew in Newfoundland during the war years, and then joined Eatons - a company which he faithfully served for over 25 years. He resided at Central Care Home for the past 17 years, where he enjoyed wonderful care, and reciprocated with his good humour and participation in plays, spelling competitions and other "in-house" events. He became a true "member of the establishment" and will be missed. John's family extends their gratitude to Dr. Cox and the caregivers at Central Care Home. A gathering of family, staff and residents to remember John will be held at Central Care Home in the near future. No formal service by request of family. Arrangements entrusted to the VancouverIsland Memorial Society and Sequoia Gardens.
