John M. Whelan, 92, died peacefully on Aug. 10, 2014, at the Allegro Skilled Nursing Facility in St. Petersburg, Fla. Mr. Whelan is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Fulghum of Lewiston, Maine, and sons, Dennis Whelan of Tierra Verde, Fla., and Kerry Whelan of Tucson, Ariz. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Kailey Whelan of West Babylon, N.Y. Mr. Whelan grew up in Lyndhurst, N.J. Although he had become deeply interested in chemistry while he was in public school, family members encouraged him to pursue a degree in engineering, so he enrolled at the Stevens Institute of Technology, where he was awarded a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with distinction in 1941, at the age of 19. Two years later he received a master of science degree in chemistry from Stevens. In 1959, after having balanced the demands of his career as a research chemist with the Union Carbide Corporation, raising a family, and further academic study, he was awarded a Ph.D. in organic chemistry by the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, now known as the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He retired from the Union Carbide Corporation in 1976, after a 35-year career during which he became assistant director of research for the Union Carbide Plastics Division. Following his retirement he authored two books, "The Wooden Plane, Its History, Form, and Function," and "Making Traditional Wooden Planes." He also served as the president of CRAFTS of New Jersey, a tool collecting society, from 1990 to 1996, and wrote numerous articles for the society's publication as well as for other publications.
