LAWRENCE -- John M. Belanger, 49, a lifelong resident of South Lawrence, who was a carpenter for several years and an active sportsman, died Friday, Sept. 9, at the family residence, surrounded by his family who have cared for him for the last four months, following a courageous battle with cancer.He was born in Methuen, son of Henry J. and Hazel (Collins) Belanger of Lawrence. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence in 1973, and was awarded his degree in political science from Merrimack College in North Andover in 1977. A lifelong resident of South Lawrence, Mr. Belanger attended Saint Patrick Church.For several years, Mr. Belanger had been employed as a carpenter with Local Union #111.According to his family, he was a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Pelham Rod and Gun Club, a lifetime member of the NRA, and simply put was the consummate sportsman.He also enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Jake.Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia Jarrell of Derry, N.H., and Linda Wasylak and Stephen F. Wasylak, Jr. of Dracut; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Pam Belanger of Methuen; a nephew, Philip Jarrell; four nieces, Debra Kendall, Rachael Belanger, Robin Belanger, and Victoria Wasylak.
