John L. Hyattof Owego, N.Y.John L. Hyatt, 87, of Owego, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 17, 2003. He was born in the Town of Tioga on September 2, 1915, the son of the late Wesley and Lillie (Weber) Hyatt. He was predeceased by his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Mabel Hyatt, Howard and Ruth Hyatt; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Arthur Hollenbeck. John is survived by his wife, Emily (Bostwick) Hyatt; his son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Linda (Stocks) Hyatt, Owego; his two daughters, Ann Hyatt, Los Angeles, Calif., Jan Hyatt, Westcliffe, Colo.; his three grandchildren, Amy Hyatt, Owego, Jon Hyatt, Virginia Beach, Va., and Mathew Hyatt, Jackson Heights, N.Y.; also several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. John was a lifelong resident of the Town of Tioga and graduated from OFA in 1932. He ran the family farm on Spaulding Hill with his father, Wesley, and his brother, Howard, and later his son, Gerald, until he retired. John and Emily enjoyed many trips during their retirement, traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Europe, as well as various places in the United States. He enjoyed genealogy, and traced his family heritage back to the 1700's. John also enjoyed woodworking with his Shopsmith and was a Habitat for Humanity Volunteer, working on many housing projects and serving on the Board of Directors. He served on the Board of Directors for the Farmers Production Credit Association of Ithaca, N.Y. for many years, and was a member of the Flemingville/Goodrich Settlement Grange since 1939. He served 31 years on the Town of Tioga Board as Town Justice and later as Councilman. He was a member of the Tioga County Farm Bureau, serving on the Board of Directors and as President. He also served on the Board of Directors of Tioga Cemetery since 1950. John was a member of the Rotary Club of Owego and was honored as Paul Harris Fellow in 1995. He was an active member of the Owego United Methodist Church since July 1942. He enjoyed singing in the church choir for many of those years, and he and Emily served as co-treasurers for the church for 35 years. John also enjoyed singing with the Owego Choral Society for a number of years.
