WEST PARIS, Maine -- John Lyndon Ames, 80, died Jan. 29, 2011, at Ledgeview Nursing Home after a battle with cancer.He was born July 26, 1930, in Auburn, to Chauncey and Maude Chute Ames. He graduated from Paris High School in 1948.At age 19, he began his lifelong career with the Canadian National Railroad as a telegraph operator. He worked at railroad stations in New England, New York and Ontario and took thousands of photographs of trains, many of which were later published.He volunteered for Civil Defense, and was a member of the Grange in West Paris.He moved to Gorham, N.H., in 1970, because he was working primarily at the station in Berlin, N.H. He was active in the Community Baptist Church.His hobbies included building model railroad cars, doing crossword puzzles, and playing Scrabble. He was a good cook and made many delicious soups.Family members include his wife of 41 years, Mary Jane Ames of West Paris; two daughters, Alice Corbett of Sanford, Fla., and Lois Tignor of Portoviejo, Ecuador; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.SERVICES: Calling hours are Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, Bryant Pond. A memorial service is planned at the West Paris Baptist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m.Online condolences may be shared with his family at andrewsgreenleaf.com.
