John Grier Hudson III, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at his home.Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of John Grier Hudson Jr. and stepmother Marcia Heffner Hudson of Clinton, S.C. He was the son of the late Nancy Watts-Bloom and stepfather, the late Lester J. Bloom of St. George Island, Fla. He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Richardson Hudson, his maternal grandparents, Garrison Grier and Dale Suits Watts of Gaffney, S.C., and paternal grandparents, John Grier and Carson Yates Hudson of Spartanburg, S.C.He is survived by his sister, Dale Garrison Hudson Howard and her husband, William B. "Bos" Howard of Clinton, S.C.; three nieces, Dale Garrison Howard of Greenville, S.C., and Louise Barrett and Marcia Grier Howard both of Clinton, S.C. He was also the nephew of Maude Ogburn Hudson Henderson and the late Daniel Sullivan Henderson on his paternal side and on his maternal side by Dr. Garrison Grier and Linda Watts of Tryon, N.C.Grier was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he earned a BS degree in finance and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He began his career in the bond department at Citizen's and Southern Bank in Columbia, S.C. Until his recent retirement, he was a bonds broker for 20 years with Craigie Incorporated of Richmond, Va., which later merged with BB&T. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond where he enjoyed helping to maintain the building and grounds. He also served the homeless through his church. He was an avid chef and he was also well known for cooking and sharing his smoked turkeys with the local firefighters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, VA 23226. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building & Grounds Committee at First Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.
