John Garrett Van Horn, 76, of Saratoga Springs, died peacefully at his home Saturday, January 10, 2009. Born on June 10, 1932 on a dairy farm in Allamuchy, New Jersey, the son of Garrett and Clara Van Horn, John graduated from Hackettstown High School, class of 1950, where he was awarded a football scholarship to play for the Washington Huskies. He attended the University of Washington, Seattle, WA from 1950 to 1954. He served in the U.S. Army as 1st lieutenant at Fort Ord, CA, in the Transportation Unit until 1956. John had worked at the John Deere Company for ten years as a territory manager from 1956 to 1966. In 1966, he began at Moore Business Forms in Albany, NY, where he specialized in custom business forms and printing services. He retired in 1991. He was a kind, gentle giant of a man; always giving never taking. He carried a clipping given to him by his mother before he left for college that said, &quot;There is never a right way to do a wrong thing.&quot; John Van Horn walked the walk and he believed in being grateful for all of the blessings in life. John was the husband of Elizabeth Mae (Huizengal) Van Horn; they married on September 11, 1954. He is also survived by his children, John G. (Sherry) Van Horn II, Elizabeth M. (Mike) Jones, Melanie (Mike) Balestra; grandchildren, Brooke Elizabeth Jones, Sara May, Michael John and Mark William Balestra. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 13, at 1 p.m. at Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, Saratoga Road, Burnt Hills.
