Township resident John F. Carter, 88, died Feb 5. A memorial service will be planned for a future date. Born in Newark, he was raised in Maplewood and a resident of Short Hills. He graduated from Columbia High School. Following his service in World War II with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre, he resumed his education at Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He later studied commercial art at Parsons School of Design in New York City. His career was spent in advertising with Scholastic Magazines in New York. He was an active member of Community Congregational Church in Short Hills, the Millburn Old Guard and the Short Hills Association. Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Anne Henoch of Cranford; a son, Douglas F. of Danville, Vt.; and four grandchildren.
