->East Lyme - Joanne Virginia (Zito) Johnson, 74, of Niantic, beloved wife of 51 years of Dale H. Johnson and devoted mother and grandmother, passed to eternal life Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, after an extended illness.Born in New London on May 20, 1935, Joanne was the daughter of Mauro and Vincenza (Baracco) Zito. She was the youngest of eight children. She worked in a variety of positions and retired as the office manager for Herman Dolan, D.D.S, in 1985. Joanne volunteered in the school system and at the East Lyme Senior Center. She and her husband Dale were communicants of St. Agnes Church for more than 48 years and were active members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society where Joanne organized holiday food basket donations and other events for many years.Joanne married Dale Henning Johnson of Champaign, Ill., on Feb. 15, 1958, at St. Mary's Church, New London. They were life-long companions, traveling extensively and enjoying the company of family and friends.Joanne took great joy in being a mother and grandmother. She leaves her children, Geralyn Johnson-Reis and her husband, Dominick, of Bethany, Janice Stingle and her husband, Robert, of North Granby, and Thomas Johnson and his wife, Katy, of Jamestown, R.I.; as well as five grandchildren, John and Grace Stingle, Nicholas and Blythe Reis, and Owen Johnson. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Margaret Renzetti of New London.Joanne was predeceased by her parents as well as six siblings, Annie Santangelo, Charles Zito, Josphine Guiliano, Grace Favolise, Joseph Zito, and James Zito.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Agnes Church in Niantic followed by a burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in New London. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Southeastern CT, 227 Dunham St., Norwich CT 06360.
