Joan G. Smith October 15, 1945 – April 14, 2015 Joan Smith G. late of Saskatoon, SK and formerly of Swift Current, SK. Joan was born October 15, 1945 and spent her childhood on the family farm near Arelee, SK. The family moved in the mid-1950's to Saskatoon where Joan completed her high school, first at Aden Bowman and then at Nutana Collegiate. Working at Kanigan's, Joan completed her B.A. and B.Ed. before moving to Consul, SK to begin her teaching career. A year later Joan moved to Swift Current to teach English at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. Swift Current became her home for the next forty years. A well-respected educator and principal, Joan retired from teaching in 2000. A member and life elder of First United Church in Swift Current, Joan continued to serve her community and church until recent ill-health necessitated a move closer to her family. Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Lillian (Nesdole) Smith. She is survived by her four siblings, Allen (Hazell), Sharon, Bonnie and Lyndon (Jan); nieces and nephews, Bobbi Smith, Lana Bahri, Duane Smith, Jennifer (Simon) Carter, Rae-Lynn (Ryan) Arnold, Paul Smith, Joel Smith and Lindsay Smith; great nieces and nephews, Jordan Smith, Paige Smith, Zoey Carter, Sebastian Carter, Tristan Carter, Olivia Arnold and Eleanor Arnold; great-great nieces and nephews, Taylor Smith, Leah Smith, Maddison Smith and Anastasia Lillian Joan Carter; and her former sister-in-law, Thea Smith (Lawrence van Wezel). The Memorial Services will be held at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2015 officiated by Rev. Cathy Coates and at First United Church (223 3rd Avenue NE, Swift Current, SK) at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015 officiated by Rev. Annette Taylor. Both services will be immediately followed by a luncheon and a time of fellowship with the family. The family wishes to extend our sincerest appreciation to Joan's many friends and colleagues. Each of you blessed Joan with your friendship, care and compassion. Special thanks to her church family at First United Church in Swift Current, as well as the Swift Current home care nurses.
