WHITE, Joan Mary January 29, 1924 - June 22, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mom was born to parents Rose and Eli Severson in a cabin on their homestead in Forestdale (close to Burns Lake) B.C. She spent long days working on the farm under the watchful eye of her father and developed her incredible work ethic and as she called it "her Pioneer spirit". In the 1940s mom moved to Victoria where she worked at Yarrow Shipyard during the war, the Hudson's Bay and Minnis Pharmacy. On June 7, 1952 mom married our father Derek White and had sons David in 1956 followed by Bruce in 1958. The boys were blessed to have two such fine, loving parents. Summers at a cabin near Yellowpoint, trips to Hawaii and Disneyland are cherished memories of their sons. Mom enjoyed many pastimes including playing bridge and blackjack, golf, bowling, tending to her flowers and many other pursuits. The cookie jar was always full of gumdrop and chocolate chip cookies that were hungrily consumed by her sons and grandsons. Her Nanaimo bars, apple crisp, muffins and many other treats were prime targets too. Mom was active in the P.E.O. Sisterhood and served as their treasurer for many years. Mom was an incredibly warm, fun, intelligent and consistently positive person that could always be counted on regardless of the challenge. She had a broad circle of relatives and friends that truly thought the world of her and helped her wherever they could as her health challenges mounted in recent months. She is hugely missed by sons Bruce and David, grandsons (Tom, Ben, Cody, and Troy), granddaughter (Danielle and her husband Ronnie), great-grandsons (Oscar and Oliver), daughter-in-law (Diane) as well as her many relatives and friends. Our special thanks to Dr. Karen Klingenberg for her outstanding and compassionate care of our mother. We also thank the many other caregivers who helped mom during her final months. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. A celebration of her incredible life will be held at a later date. We miss her beyond belief!
