She is remembered for her warm and ready laugh, her kindness, courage, strength, and energy. She is survived by her beloved husband, John Hayes; her brother, James (JoAnn) O'Neil of Binghamton and sister in law Helen (Robert) O'Neil of Plattsburg, NY; her ten children, Nancy (Chris) Davies of Waverly, Joseph (Mary) Hayes of St. Cloud, FL, Daniel (Lori) Hayes of Vestal, Karen (Gary) Marshall of Haddonfield, NJ, Eileen (Michael) Cunningham of Atlanta, Kevin (Cindy) Emmons of Binghamton, Linda (Michael) Ketchoyian of Endicott, James (Terry) Hayes of Collegeville, PA, Ann (Tony) Ryan of Boston and Mark (Frances) Emmons of San Francisco; 26 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Joan was born in Johnson City to Helen and Joseph O'Neil, graduated from St. Patrick's Academy and received her nursing degree from St. Joseph's Nursing School in Elmira. Professionally she was competent, caring and compassionate and her desire to help others was evident in all facets of her life. She started her career in the emergency room of Lourdes hospital and retired after 15 years at IBM in Endicott. Joan and John had a wonderful life together full of family and wonderful friends. They shared a love of music, old movies, visits with their large extended family, and barbecues on the back deck. They were members of the Church of the Holy Family in Endwell and were grateful for their many blessings. One of Joan's favorite expressions was "My cup runneth over". Her brother Robert, former husband Roger Emmons and granddaughter Melissa Hayes all predeceased Joan. A special thanks to the wonderful staff at Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the tender caring of Joan over the last four years. The family invites you to celebrate Joan's life on Thursday, December 18 from 4-7 p.m. at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc. at 150 Main Street, Johnson City.
