DOREE, Joan Florence AliceJanuary 18, 1919 - February 26, 2016Following a brief illness, Joan died in Vancouver, BC. She was predeceased by her sister Rosa (2005), brother Arthur (2008), and sister Emily (2011). Joan is lovingly remembered by nephews, Martin (Bobbi) of Grindrod, and Brian of Vernon, as well as niece Anne (Brett Malo) of Port Coquitlam and their respective families. Also missing Joan are dear friends Anna, Linda, and Olive. Joan''s initial nursing education was completed at St. Paul''s Hospital School of Nursing in Saskatoon (1940). She spent the next few years working as a nurse at various hospitals in Canada until WWII. Joan enlisted in the army during WWII and worked as a Lieutenant Nursing Sister primarily at the military hospital in Basingstoke, England. Upon her return to Canada after WWII, Joan completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at UBC (1949) and returned to work as a RN at several Vancouver hospitals before embarking on a lengthy career as a Public Health Nurse. Midway through her career, Joan earned a Masters Degree in Public Health Administration from the University of California, Berkeley (1967). Joan continued to be an active member of the Registered Nurses Foundation of BC (RNFBC) until her death. Joan''s keen interest in history, especially Canadian, prompted her to join both the BC History of Nursing Society and the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing where she assisted with many research projects. The family wishes to thank medical staff at St. Paul''s Hospital and Holy Family Hospital who tended to Joan in her last months. No service by request.
